Based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards, each of the set's five volumes focuses on one area of math, thoroughly examining the processes, notable events, and key individuals that played a prominent role in the development of that mathematical area. One volume each is devoted to geometry, algebra, numbers, and probability and statistics. A fifth volume, ""Mathematics and the Laws of Nature"", incorporates some elements of geometry, algebra, numbers, scientific computation, and limit, the idea behind calculus. This volume emphasizes connections between mathematics and other fields so that the utility and vibrancy of the subject is made clear to readers. Additionally, each volume in the set explains how certain types of 'pure' mathematics are used in the applied mathematical sciences.
