Political scientists Parla (Bogazici U., Istanbul) and Davison (Vassar College) develop a theoretically and comparatively informed account of the ideological content of the political thought and practice of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and his party, and of the persistently official and semiofficial hegemonic ideology of the Turkish Republic, formally founded in 1923. By looking at speeches and official documents they feel have been neglected, they interpret the political, economic, social, and cultural goals of the Kemalist version of Turkish nationalism and the power relations Ataturk and his colleagues believed were necessary to achieve them.
