The selections reflect the public campaign, fought in the popular press, of opponents to the fundamental goal of all aspects of movement for women's rights, to challenge the gender system by advocating equality for women. About the Author Gillian Swanson is Senior Lecturer in the School of Cultural Studies at the University of the West of England. She is co-editor (with Christine Gledhill) of Nationalizing Femininity: Culture, Sexuality, and Cinema in Britain in World War Two (Manchester University Press, 1996), and co-author (with Patricia Wise) of Going for Broke: Women's Participation in the Arts and Cultural Industries (1998).
