Product Description Recent earthquakes in many countries of the world have confirmed the potential for very large seismic events that until now were not forecast. The level of disturbance and destruction of highways and bridges as well as life, suffered during these dominant earthquakes were far greater than structural engineers and their associated design codes had predicted. One important lesson that has been learnt is that it is vital that bridges, which connect major transportation routes, must continue to function after an earthquake. . In the quest of this realization, new technologies and design efforts by engineers have resulted in the development of seismic protection systems, which include Shock Transmission Unit (STU) together with various seismic isolation and energy mitigation devices. In the only book to provide independent, non-proprietary information on the design and application of STUs, the author offers information on a wide range of different applications, including new and existing highway and railway bridges, as well as non-bridge structures such as nuclear power plants. Illustrated case studies included throughout, Shock Transmission Units in Construction is written by a proven expert in STUs and the only world authority on the subject. About the Author About the Author Dinesh J. Patel, MEngSc, FIEAust, CPEng, FIBE, MIHT, was a structural engineer and member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He devoted the majority of his career to the research and application of STUs in structural design and in particular their application in bridges. He led numerous projects around the world which made use of STUs, including the Second Bassein Creek Bridge at Mumbai, which was the first highway bridge in India to have STUs installed. He has written numerous papers and case study articles on the subject. He passed away in November 2009. Technical Editor As the author is deceased, a technical editor would be required to tidy up the manuscript, implement reviewers’ suggestions (where deemed necessary) and be available for the copy editing and proof reading process. Dr Beile Yin of Hardesty & Hanover (US) has volunteered to take on this role and already suggested a way in which the book might be better organised (see reviews). Dr Yin is the Hardesty & Hanover seismic analysis expert and has worked on seismic design for retro-fits and new bridges. He has BSc and MSc degrees from China and earned a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in 1986. Yin applied STUs to a new large bridge in New York State, which is currently under construction and now almost completed.
