In its initial phase, Islamic banking - with its prohibition on interest - struggled with concepts. Now, Islamic banking is entering the second phrase of dealing in capital and money market instruments as a means of risk and investment management. Private funds for Islamic investments are estimated at US$50 billion. Although the large multinational banks have most of it at present, Islamic banks are becoming increasingly sophisticated and hungry for their share. The book reflects on the implications of the context between large banks of the Middle East and Malaysia on the one hand, and the United States, Europe and Japan on the other. Derivatives have received intensive media coverage following the Orange County collapse and the Barings fiasco. Banks have offered derivatives packages to Islamic investors, and this timely book also presents an exposition of the Islamic view of derivatives. The contributors to this volume, all professionals and practitioners from leading financial institutions, give the book a unique stature. The work consists of twenty papers dealing with topics that include prospects of investments in Islamic banks; an anatomy of the privatisation process and possible services by Islamic banks; the potential role and competitiveness of Islamic banking in a Western context, financial derivative products in reference to Ahadith literature and Figh; and Economy and Society - an Islamic perspective.
