Description

This text presents a view of the way in which Italy's past has had a bearing on the present. It explores the nature and implications of its inhabitants' success in coping with the contradictions of the country's political and economic situation and its social structure. The book attempts to explain how this success is related to the making and repeated remaking of the Italian nation-state and, through the major episodes of the crisis since Bonaparte's conquests began the process whereby the idea of a united Italy became a political reality, of Italian society itself. About the Author Roger Absalom taught for many years at the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology, before moving to Sheffield City Polytechnic (now Sheffield Hallam University) as Head of Modern Languages in 1973. He was appointed Reader in Italian Studies in 1988.
