Elsevier The Inner Magnetosphere as a System

The Inner Magnetosphere as a System explores the complex and dynamic behavior of the inner magnetosphere, a region of near-Earth space filled with plasmas and neutrals, threaded by the planet's magnetic field and linked by a complex web of self-modifying interactions. Inner magnetospheric populations play a central role in many space weather phenomena affecting astronauts, satellites, ground infrastructure, navigation, and communication. This book introduces the inner magnetosphere as a unified "system of systems", the modern paradigm developed over several decades of space physics research and observations. With a focus on cross-region, cross-energy interactions affecting the entire system from microscale to macroscale, the book offers a thorough analysis of the physical processes connecting the various components of the system. The reader takes a guided journey through the cardinal constituents of the inner magnetosphere―the plasmasphere, ring current, and radiation belts―plus their partner populations: the ionosphere, neutral exosphere, oxygen torus, and warm plasma cloak. This book is an essential resource for a deeper understanding of our planet's inner magnetosphere and its most important space weather impacts. Covers the entire system of Earth’s inner magnetosphere Explores cross-region, cross-energy, multiscale coupling among all components Describes plasmasphere, ring current, and radiation belts plus partner populations Includes instructional material, research reviews, and new pedagogical approaches
