On a global scale, crustal stresses are the result of plate tectonics. On a regional basis, the knowledge of stresses is of vital interest for deep mining, geothermal heat exploitation for electricity generation from deep hot rock formations, safe underground hazardous waste disposal scenarios in impermeable rock, and large-scale tunneling for high-speed traffic. This book originated in a workshop on Rock Mechanics with Emphasis on In-Situ Stress.
