Product Description This study attempts to present a broad picture of political and economic developments in Russia after the collapse of the USSR. The book focuses on economics, social, financial and political tendencies that framed Russia's development in 1992-98, including an overview of successes and failures of Russian reform attempts, background and consequences of the collapse of Russia's financial market in August 1998, dynamics of capital flight from Russia, industrial, agricultural, trade and social development indicators. A major part of the study is devoted to a comparative analysis of developments in Russia's eighty nine administrative regions, particularly in the three major groups of regions - with predominantly mining, manufacturing and agricultural orientation. The book also examines voting patterns and political preferences in Russian regions, origins and the evolution of the Russian political system, limitations of the post-Soviet 'nomenklatura revolution' and Russia's search for a new national idea. About the Author VLADIMIR TIKHOMIROV is Deputy Director of the Contemporary Europe Research Centre at the University of Melbourne, Australia,. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Russian and Euro-Asian Bulletin. His publications include Development of Political Thought in South Africa, 1948-1988 (1991) and he has edited the Anatomy of the 1998 Russian Crisis (1999).
