Product Description This book consists of a number of papers presented to the Chinese Economic Association (UK) Annual Conferences in the late 1990s. They address many important issues in China's economy under transition. The book consists of three parts: industrial restructuring and enterprise reform; the rural sector - agricultural develop-ment and industrialization; and modelling transition and structural change. In addition to the analyses of specific issues provided by individual papers, themes recurring in several contribute to broader theoretical, empirical and policy literatures. Some focus on the comparative literature on transition economies of China and Eastern European and former Soviet Union countries; some apply new methodologies to the analysis of economic issues such as money demand, consumption behaviour and industrial structural change; while others focus on policy and institutional reforms. Most contributors are experienced China scholars from the United Kingdom, France, the United States of America as well as from China itself. About the Author SARAH COOK is a Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex. Her research focuses on the social and micro-level impact of economic reform in China, and includes work on labour markets and employment in rural China, rural social welfare reform, poverty and gender. Her publications include articles in the Journal of Development Studies and Oxford Development Studies. SHUJIE YAO is Professor and Director of Development Economics Research, University of Portsmouth. He has worked as a consultant for a number of international organizations, including the World Bank, the European Union and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in many different countries in Asia and Africa. He is author of Agricultural Reforms and Grain Production in China, and co-author of Economic Reforms and State-Owned Enterprises in China, 1981-87. He has published papers in many economic journals, including the Journal of Political Economy, Economic Development and Cultural Change, the Journal of Development Studies, the Journal of Comparative Economics, Applied Economics, the Journal of Agricultural Economics, Food Policy, Environmental and Resource Economics, Regional Studies and the Journal of Environmental Management. He is also a member of the international editorial board of Food Policy. JUZHONG ZHUANG is Economist in the Asian Development Bank, Manila, the Philippines. While working on this volume, he was Research Officer at the London School of Economics. He has published articles in Economica, Economics of Planning, the International Review of Applied Economics and the Asian Pacific Business Review. He edited and co-edited two special issues for Economics of Planning and the International Review of Applied Economics. His current research interests include corporate governance and financing in Asia, reform of state-owned enterprises, and privatization.
