Description

Concrete-filled single skin (CFT) and double skin tubular (CFDST) members have advantages over concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns. These include high strength and bending stiffness, fire performance, and ease of construction. CFT columns are made from a single-skin outer jacket surrounding a concrete infill, whereas a CFDST column consists of two concentric steel tubes with concrete in-fill. Despite the advantages CFT and CFDST hold over more conventional tubular columns, these structural elements remain relatively unused, there is a lack of understanding concerning their behaviour, and design provisions are lacking. Review Presents a comprehensive summary of research into single- and double-skin tubular members From the Back Cover Concrete-filled single skin (CFT) and double skin tubular (CFDST) members have advantages over concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns. These include high strength and bending stiffness, fire performance, and ease of construction. Despite the advantages CFT and CFDST hold over more conventional tubular columns, these structural elements remain relatively unused, there is a lack of understanding concerning their behaviour, and design provisions are lacking.
Single Skin and Double Skin Concrete Filled Tubular Members presents the state-of-the-art on single-skin and double-skin tubular members, including their compressive and bending strength. The book grounds coverage in numerous published studies from the last few decades, reviewing research, and emphasising experimental and finite element (FE) work under axial compression, bending and combined action. The title offers examples of design following codes from N. America (e.g. ACI318); Europe (e.g. Eurocode 4) and Australia (e.g. AS 5100). The book considers the latest experimental results and design methods with different cross-sections, and makes recommendations for future research. This title provides a review of the most up-to-date advances in single-skin and double-skin concrete filled tubular members, for the practical use of civil engineers, and as a resource for further research.
About the Author Mohamed Elchalakani Crawley is Senior Lecturer, and Director of the Structural Laboratory, at the University of Western Australia. He has published over 170 papers on the analysis and design of single skin and double skin concrete-filled tubular members. Pouriya Ayough is a Graduate Research Assistant the University of Malaya in Malaysia, and holds a PhD in Structural Engineering, also from the University of Malaya. Bo Yang is a Full Professor in the School of Civil Engineering, at Chongqing University, China. He obtained his PhD from the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), in Singapore. His expertise includes experimental tests and numerical modelling of steel and composite structures under progressive collapse scenarios.
