There has been insufficient medical research in women-specific health needs until recently. This historical lack of research focus on women s health needs has compromised improvements in women s health. During the last two decades, however, significant changes in government support of research, in policies and regulations around that research, and in the organisation of research efforts have resulted in the generation of new scientific knowledge on women s health. Women s Health Research reviews major research findings on women s health since 1990, and how these findings have been translated into practice and communicated to the public. The book explores whether current research is studying the most appropriate and relevant determinants of health; whether the most appropriate research methods are being employed; and whether research includes women that are socially disadvantaged because of their race or ethnicity, income-level, or level of educational attainment. Women s Health Research discusses the research on the impact of various biological, psychological, environmental, and socio-cultural factors on women s health, especially those that might affect women disproportionately or uniquely. Women s Health Research identifies breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, and cervical cancer as conditions where major progress has been made but also discusses several gaps in and barriers to women s health research. Given the many significant roles women play in our society, maintaining support for women s health research and enhancing its impact are not only in the interest of women, they are in the interest of us all. Women s Health Research provides valuable information and recommendations for women s health and serves as a useful guide for non-governmental women s health organisations, policymakers, researchers and professionals working in health care.
