Product Description While the long-term gains from liberalization are generally accepted, liberalizing economies are, nevertheless, likely to face short to medium term adjustment costs. Yet most developing countries do not have well-developed social safety nets to address these problems. This book gauges the possible development implications of the current WTO trade negotiations by examining the various proposals and assessing their likely economic impact. Eight country studies examine the experiences of a number of countries at different levels of development and across various regions to ascertain the impact of their trade reforms and the factors contributing to the outcomes. About the Author SAM LAIRD is Inter-regional Advisor at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Switzerland. He is also Special Professor of International Economics at the University of Nottingham, UK, Research Associate at Trinity College, Ireland, and Visiting Professor at the World Trade Institute, Switzerland. He worked previously at the World Bank and the WTO. He has published extensively on international trade policy.SANTIAGO FERNÁNDEZ DE CÓRDOBA is Economist at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Switzerland. He is also Special Professor of Economics at the Universisdad de Navarra, Spain, and has been a consultant for the World Bank, Ecuadorian Government and Andean community. He has published extensively on international trade policy.
