Description
This third volume, covering 1653 to 1655, traces Cromwell's emergence both as ruler of his country and as an international statesman. In December 1653, after the collapse of Barebone's parliament (a short-lived experiment in radical Puritan rule), he became Lord Protector under a new constitution designed by the army, the Instrument of Government. The volume traces his failed attempt to win Parliament's assent for that constitution in 1654, and describes his response the following year when royalist plotting led to an insurrection under Colonel Penruddock. Abroad, it covers the series of hard-won treaties, with France and with Protestant powers, which paved the way for war with Spain towards the end of 1655. It ends at a point when Cromwell perhaps enjoyed the greatest power, but the least support.
