The manuscript consists of four main sections. It first introduces the two most common approaches to glucose monitoring self-monitoring blood glucose and continuous glucose monitoring discussing system components, accuracy, impact of their use on quality of glycemic control as documented by landmark clinical trials, and mathematical approaches developed to model and process the measured signals. This treatment is then followed by a section discussing how data obtained from these monitoring devices are deployed within diabetes management systems such as the artificial pancreas, with attention to the algorithms used in the decision support systems and clinical outcomes related to their use. The last section of the book is dedicated to new approaches to glucose monitoring. The reality of long-term implantable glucose sensors is here presented and discussed, with attention to the technology and performance in clinical trials; and this treatment is followed by the introduction of intraperitoneal glucose sensing as an alternative to conventional blood glucose monitoring. The purpose of the book is to provide a comprehensive treatment about glucose monitoring devices, which could not otherwise be found from a single manuscript. The main benefit of the book is the variety of topics that are covered, which renders this text an excellent reference book for doctoral and postdoctoral students working in the field of diabetes technology, both in academia and industry. About the Author Dr. Chiara Fabris is Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and member of the faculty at the Center for Diabetes Technology. She holds a Master’s and a Doctoral Degree in Bioengineering from the University of Padova (Padova, Italy) and has significant experience in mathematical modeling and simulation – especially regarding the glucose/insulin regulation system – and algorithm development. Over the past four years, Dr. Fabris has been awarded an Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship and a Career Development Award by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which supported the development and clinical testing of decision support systems to help people with diabetes manage their disease. Dr. Fabris is involved in several projects focused on optimization of treatments for diabetes and diabetes data science. Dr. Boris Kovatchev is Professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and School of Engineering, and founding director of the Center for Diabetes Technology. He has a 30-year track
