Description

Most parking research to date has been conducted in Western countries. Parking: An International Perspective is different. Taking a planetary view of urbanism, this book examines parking policies in 12 cities on five continents: Auckland, Bangkok, Doha, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Nairobi, Rotterdam, Santiago, Sao Paulo, Shenzhen, Singapore, and Tokyo. Chapters are similarly structured, and contain detailed information about the current parking strategies and issues in these cities. The discussion of parking is placed in the context of transport, mobility, land-use, society, technology, and planning in each of these cities Review Compares parking and land-use policies across the world, addressing changing trends in mobility preferences and space devoted to parking From the Back Cover Urban Parking: An International Perspective examines international parking best practices, highlighting the ways innovative cities are managing the allocation of finite space. Substantial amounts of land in metropolitan areas are dedicated to accommodate parked vehicles. Increased levels of consolidation, and densities have put new pressures on cities to better manage parking spaces, and re-imagine use for this space as ride-sharing, autonomous vehicles and other trends change the way people move, and their vehicle choices. Urban Parking: An International Perspective addresses how recent socio-economic and development trends, such as young people driving less and delaying the obtainment of drivers licenses, and the promotion of Transit Oriented Development (TOD), affect the future of land currently dedicated to parking in urban areas. The book provides a real-world look at how land use policies, such as replacing parking minimums with parking maximums, paid parking at suburban malls, and incentivizing park n rides, continue to change city landscapes. Urban Parking: An International Perspective helps guide transportation and city planners in proposing the best land-use, and parking solutions for their municipalities. The book inspires new avenues of transportation research for parking policy, helping provide future-thinking, efficient solutions for the parked car, and the space it consumes.
