Description

Designed for a one-semester beginning or introductory algebra course, this successful worktext is appropriate for lecture, learning center, laboratory, or self-paced courses. Maintaining its hallmark features of carefully detailed explanations and accessible pedagogy, this edition of "Beginning Algebra" also addresses the AMATYC and NCTM Standards. In addition to the changes incorporated into the text, a new integrated video series and multimedia tutorial program are also available. From the Publisher There is a new Arithmetic Review Chapter at the beginning of the book (Chapter 0). Chapter summaries and exercises are found at the end of every chapter and highlight main ideas. Cumulative reviews begin with Chapter Two and serve as a review of the major topics presented to that point in the text. Exercise Sets and real-world applications support the NCTM/AMATYC Standards and expose students to a more active and meaningful understanding of mathematics and how it relates to everyday life. Technology examples and exercises support both scientific and graphing calculators. Active Learning is stressed via "Check Yourself" boxes, which follow every example. Students are asked to apply what they have just learned and are able to receive immediate feedback. Emphasis on graphing and interpreting graphs. The treatment of graphing has been expanded to two chapters. Emphasis on modeling real phenomena. This is accomplished by means of mathematical relationships. Emphasis on the "ac" method of factoring. Text is available on Primis. There are new Pre-Tests before each chapter, beginning with Chapter One. There are text-specific links for the ALEKS system available. This text is packaged with a free text-specific CD. The SMART CD contains algorithmically generated problems at the chapter and section level, as well as tutorials for each section. Each of the first five chapters opens with a suggestion on "Overcoming Math Anxiety." Text is available on Primis. In accordance with the AMATYC standards, an introduction to and consistent coverage of statistics is provided throughout.
