Description

Written by foremost social work educator Ronald Federico and revised by William Whitaker, the second edition of "Social Welfare in Today's World" remains true to the original purpose of the text - to provide a comparative analysis for students of our social welfare system in light of others, with examples drawn from Mexico, Poland, and Sweden. The book is structured around a series of key questions such as: What is social welfare?, Why do we need it?, Why is it controversial? The questions provide a framework for the chapters, which then answer the questions while at the same time covering the basics of the social welfare system. Through the use of vivid examples and cases, the text enables students to connect with the real people who are the consumers of social welfare services and programs. From the Publisher Introduction to social welfare/policy in departments of social work, sociology, political science and public administration both at the undergraduate and masters levels. Comparative. The text compares welfare systems in Mexico, Sweden, Poland and the U.S in each chapter and includes a special a photo essay of each. Gives social welfare a human face...with case studies called ôThe Human Face of Social Welfareö that focus on real people in real situations and with mini essays called ôOn the Streetö that describe the people, places, and programs that comprise the social welfare system. Establishes a framework. The text provides students with the concepts and values necessary to understand the welfare system and the debates that surround it. Comprehensive. Detailed description of the history and structure of social welfare institutions in the United States and other countries provides students with a context from which to view those systems. Pedagogy. In addition to the chapter organizing questions, the text offers chapter overviews, learning objectives, comparisons, case studies, chapter summaries, study questions, key terms and concepts, suggested readings, and a glossary. Expanded cases showcase the real people who inhabit the social welfare system. The unique cross-national perspective has been strengthened. New, unique, coverage of the five pillars of social welfare in chapter 6 (Old age and survivors, health, injury, unemployment, and family needs) is followed by a look at Poland, Mexico, and Sweden in light of those pillars in chapter 7. Unique ôSocial Welfare Report Cardö details each of those nations capacity for support for social welfare and compares the child health, education, well being of the general population and of women in each. More on diversity, the strength perspective (building on the strengths people already have), blaming the victim, and an increased cross national perspective can be found throughout.
